What can delegates look forward to in your courses?
It all depends on the nature of the course. In the introductory trading courses "Fundamentals of Energy Futures" and "Fundamentals of Energy Options" and the three-day "Overview of Oil Trading" course that I run jointly with Mary Jackson, delegates can look forward to an action-packed day. They will be spending a lot of the time trading, in a simulated market, hoping that they can, as part of a small team, apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to make more money than any other team. Shouting and arm-waving is usually part of the fun.
In the European natural gas workshops that I run as both public courses and on-site custom seminars, there are also opportunities to try out trading and to get hands-on with other practical problems, but there is a lot more detailed information about the markets and how they work.
We work hard to keep these courses bang up-to-date in this fast-changing field. So delegates can look forward to a thorough briefing that will give them all the key background info and all the latest developments. Finally, in the one-day courses that I run on more specific topics, like options strategy, exotic options and Value at Risk, delegates should expect to be slightly stretched by the intermediate level material. While we stay away from complex financial mathematics, we pull no punches in ensuring that everyone understands the key concepts behind the math. The class sizes for these courses tend to be smaller, and I am always keen to focus on the topics and issues that are of most relevance and interest to the delegates on the day.
How do you like to present your subject matter?
People who come on my classes are there because they want to learn about the subject. So, that's what we spend the day doing together. I've never aimed for a particular style. I like to think that I have sufficient interest in the subjects that I'm presenting, that my enthusiasm communicates itself to the class. I guess I'm naturally a fairly serious sort of a person, and my presentation isn't going to be packed with one-liners and anecdotes. But it's not entirely dry either. If someone's come along to a one-day course on Value-at-Risk or Exotic Options with the idea that they're just going to sit back and be entertained, then they've made a slightly odd choice, but it won't be a boring day for them, and they'll probably end up working harder and learning more than they bargained for!
What are your career/professional highlights?
There have been few major summits, but lots of small rewards. When a consulting client tells me that my report is the best he's seen, or when a delegate writes on their feedback form that the course exceeded all their expectations, that's a highlight that's worth having.
What are some of the greatest challenges facing the energy sector?
Right now, the energy industry is facing an almost unprecedented slow-down in demand, which is naturally causing people to scale back investment in new infrastructure. But as soon as demand starts to pick up again, we're going to need lots of oil and gas again. We may be seeing some fundamental, long-lasting changes in consumption habits in the developed world, with conservation and fuel substitution measures. But in the developing world, there is still a huge potential for growth in road fuel use and energy consumption in general. And while oil prices have fallen back from their heights of 2008, volatility is as high as ever, creating problems for risk management. Credit is still a big issue. And conventional wisdom about price relationships seems to be turned on its head almost daily - sour crude trading above sweet, gasoline priced below crude oil, and so on. We're certainly living in interesting times!
How do you like to spend your free time?
Outdoors, enjoying a long walk in the countryside near my Surrey home, with a cozy pub at lunchtime.
Mr. Harris' forthcoming courses include:
Overview of the European Natural Gas Industry (ENG)

16 March 2010
London, UK
Exploring European Natural Gas Markets (EEGM)

The devastation in Haiti has had a profound impact on the world and we are trying to do our part in bringing relief to its people.
The Oxford Princeton Programme held charity days at our offices last week to raise cash to be donated to organizations engaged in recovery efforts. Events included a luncheon, bake sale as well as a raffle that employees contributed towards.
We encourage all our partners, clients and friends to come together to do their part in assisting those in much and urgent need. Any effort, big or small, can make a difference.
Here are a few organizations worth considering for your donations:
The American Red Cross
UNICEF
Oxfam
