September, as the regenerative month, has us making upgrades to this newsletter as we head into another peak season for training within the energy, commodity and derivatives sectors. I will leave it to Kristi Ruskuski, our new newsletter editor, to highlight the changes
in her Editor's Corner. What you see as new and different is just the beginning of positive things to come your way as we enter the final third of 2008 and soon into 2009. I do, however, want to call your attention to all the courses debuting with this season. It is quite a list. Do take time to check them out. If you would like to have any of these take place in-house, we'd be happy to oblige.

What can delegates look forward to in your courses?

In our standard courses (Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Technology), delegates will gain a thorough understanding of the way the fuels are refined and blended, the importance of specifications and how they have evolved, the challenge of biofuels and other alternatives, vehicle and emissions control developments and how these interface with fuels. We also include sessions on additives and delegates will participate in a blending study exercise. The subject matter is technical but we strive to present the material in a way that delegates with little or no scientific background can understand (and enjoy!) Gasoline and diesel fuel are probably the two most important products for many people in the oil industry - what we hope delegates will recognize is that these "commodity" products can be marketed successfully and profitably.

How do you like to present your subject matter?

All of the lecturing team prefer an informal approach, with delegates asking questions at any time during a presentation. We try to inject a bit of humour and we much prefer interaction with the delegates - as far as I'm concerned, there is nothing worse than ending a presentation without a single question being asked.

What are your career/professional highlights?

Having my further education sponsored by Shell. Improving gasoline profitability for Shell in the UK by the practical application of Shell gasoline research, backed up by a major market research effort. Guiding Shell's international diesel fuel development programme at a time when the industry had neglected the product for a very long time. Being involved in cooperative development programmes with many of the major motor manufacturers and being seconded to CONCAWE, the oil industry's European downstream organization for environment, health and safety. However, the real highlights are all the friends I have been fortunate to know in the oil and motor industries, plus being able to retire at 53!

How do you like to spend your free time?

What free time?

International Oil Supply, Transportation, Refining and Trading

Oxford, UK

This course provides an overview of the oil supply chain from upstream economics, transporting crude oil from source to the refinery through processing, trading and the retailing of oil products. It is designed for new entrants to the oil industry. This course is ideal for use as part of an induction programme or for bringing those transferring disciplines up to speed with the area. Those without prior knowledge of the oil industry may wish to familiarise themselves through our "Introduction to the Oil Industry" course. Through the medium of continuous case study, delegates will address day-to-day problems in order to understand the relevant commercial driving forces in this area.
LPG Trading and Pricing - Shipping, Contracts and Price Risk Management

Houston, TX
27 - 29 October 2008

The course is designed to provide a firm understanding of the international LPG business - influencing factors, how it is conducted and how risks are managed. It is presented in association with Richardson Lawrie Associates - an international consulting company specialising in the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors. The course will focus on commercial aspects of the LPG business with participants engaging in real time trading cases – both physical and paper – plus workshops on shipping contracts, negotiations, calculations and tactics. The effect of new supply sources and pricing structures on international trade and downstream uses is examined together with case studies demonstrating development and disposal options in the context of LPG as a by-product and pricing into the petrochemicals sector.
