What can delegates look forward to in your courses?
An exposure to practical global experiences of retail oil industry businesses, objective examination of good and bad practices, aimed at understanding and learning what are the best practices and why. One thing which is not on the agenda is theoretical mumbo jumbo!
How do you like to present your subject matter?
By agreeing what business issues are relevant and important to the students/delegates who are present, and focusing on those as subject matters. The style is based on power point presentaions accompanied by DVD/Videos and case studies, (usually in syndicates), based on the course content. A major matter of style for me is not to preach - it is for the students/delegates present, and the businesses they represent, to make decisions that will best suit them - I try to make sure that they understand the choices and possible consequences.
What are your career/professional highlights?
Progressing from the 'bottom' of BP, (Retail Representative), to the 'top' by becoming its UK Retail Business Director. The single most significant achievement was to secure for BP the biggest Motorway Service Area in Europe - against all the odds, and all the competition.
What are some of the greatest challenges facing the energy sector?
Without doubt the need, and the growth, of new environmentally 'friendly' fuels. This is especially the case for retail, although we have the additional challenge of 'is there a need for retail service stations as we know them in tomorrow's world AND - in the short term, how do we improve the profitability of the retail oil businesses generally?
How do you like to spend your free time?
Being a grandfather to seven, shortly to become eight, grandchildren is my prime 'free time' occupation - but when they are all tucked up in bed I am an armchair sports fan - or so my wife tells me!
Stuart's forthcoming course includes:
Retail Marketing - Maximising Outlets and Networks
15-17 September 2008
Nicosia, Cyprus
