  • And Finally...
I've just returned from GASTECH 2009 in Abu Dhabi and the message is loud and clear: despite today's economic conditions, specialized training remains an integral part of many companies' growth strategies whether the objective is to attract and retain the best
talent or remain competitive. Some of the trends noted that we at The Oxford Princeton Programme are addressing include:

More regional public courses: driven in part by cost efficiency and convenience, many are requesting that offerings take place near home base. Whilst we have numerous courses taking place in Oxford, London, Singapore, Calgary and Houston, we have added new sessions in Accra, Cairo, Dubai, Geneva and Rio de Janeiro. Read on for more details.

"Off-the-shelf" in-house training: whilst we are always willing to work with clients to customise their training courses, many are looking for ready-to-implement solutions which can take place in a matter of weeks. In fact, most of our public course titles can be brought in-house so there are lots to choose from. Feel free to consult with us as well.

More web-based training titles: many are finding online learning as the perfect compliment to instructor-led training especially when it comes to new hires, those changing functions and anyone in need of a refresher. This year alone, we have included new courses on European Gas: Security of Supply, Overview of the Ethanol Markets and Introduction to Refinery Economics. We expect to add at least just as many more before the year is out.

Please continue to tell us what's on your mind. We are listening.

Best regards,

Jobert E. Abueva

Our Spotlight Series is an opportunity to hear firsthand from our global energy education experts. This month we spoke with Mr. Stuart Howell, Course Director Petroluem Retail Training:
What can delegates look forward to in your courses?
Delegates will hear of genuine practical business experiences from a man who has managed all aspects of a Retail Oil Business for a primary International oil company. I specialize in counseling and training many leading global companies in the 'must do wells' in order to succeed in both regulated and deregulated markets.

How do you like to present your subject matter?
Courses are not managed in a traditional 'talk at' people style - all sessions are interactive - debate and challenge is encouraged as seen fit by delegates - there are numerous case studies within all programmes to help with the understanding and appreciation of fundamental issues.

What are your career/professional highlights?

A highlight was leading a team that secured the most valuable 'new to industry' motorway service area in Europe - against all the odds - not least our leading competitors who to this day, remain envious of our success. But my overall highlight was to serve 'on the front line' of retailing - dealing with customers, managing finite resources & leading teams that were seldom surpassed.

What are some of the greatest challenges facing the energy sector?
There are two massive challenges for the retail oil industry. The first is how we solve the challenge of the need for non carbon based road transportation fuels - there are numerous alternatives - but how do we accommodate those which might prove most viable, and how do we determine, as soon as possible, the likely consequences on our business. The second is as an industry, each company needs to make better use of its resources i.e. finance, people, real estate and decide how best to satisfy customer needs - not just their own in corporate isolation.

How do you like to spend your free time?

Primarily a family man with 20 close relatives - any time left is spent as an active sports fan - with an emphasis on soccer.

Mr. Howell's forthcoming courses in 2009 include:

Retail Marketing - Maximising Outlets and Networks (RM0)

Cape Town, RSA
14 - 16 September 2009

Network Planning and Asset Management for Professional Retailers (RMNP)

Cape Town, RSA
17 - 18 September 2009

Our bestselling course, Oil Trading Orientation (OTO) arrives in Ghana for the first time this September!

7 - 9 September 2009
Accra, Ghana

This three-day workshop is ideal for non-traders wishing to know more about the world of oil trading, or for delegates who are at the very beginning of an oil trading career. Delegates will learn the terminology and key building blocks of knowledge for crude oil and petroleum product trading. They will also get a flavor of what a trader's job involves, through competitive team trading simulations focusing on different aspects of trading and risk management. Topics explored include crude oil quality, product refining, blending and specifications, market fundamentals, technical analysis, key trading strategies, pricing mechanisms, derivatives trading, risk management and the mechanics of trading and operations.

LNG Shipping - A Voyage of Discovery (TDLNG)

16 - 18 November 2009
Cairo, Egypt

LNG transportation accounts for 10% to 30% of total LNG supply chain costs from upstream gas production through to terminalling and regasification on the import side. It is central, both figuratively and physically, to the LNG supply chain and the safe, efficient execution of LNG supply contracts. The LNG shipping sector has also been evolving rapidly in recent years in response to accelerated growth in the international gas markets and - as in other parts of the LNG supply chain - technological innovation is seen as the means of optimising costs and increasing cargo outturn. New players have entered the LNG shipping business and the LNG industry is increasingly looking for more flexible shipping arrangements. Larger ships, innovative ship designs, new containment and propulsion systems have been developed while safety and environmental factors remain foremost considerations in the construction and operation of these vessels.

European Gas: Security of Supply (EGSS)

This JUST-IN-TIME course was created in response to the events in January 2009 when Russia curtailed supplies into Ukraine and many parts of Europe. Even as these two nations have come to an agreement to get gas flowing again, their dispute is a long-running one that has been brewing ever since the breakup of the Soviet Union. We are unlikely to see the last of it. What are the underlying dynamics of the dispute and how prepared is Europe and the rest of the world for when this situation makes headlines in the future?

Introduction to Refinery Economics (IRE)

This course provides an overview of the economics of refining.

You'll learn how refineries make money, and what affects their profitability. We'll review the fundamentals of refinery operations and planning, as well as optimization and blending. We'll also cover crude oil quality and valuation. You'll understand how refinery margins are calculated. Finally, this course will provide an overview of the market outlook for refining.

Overview of the Ethanol Market (OEM)

This JUST-IN-TIME course was created in response to growing interest in the ethanol (biofuels) market as it continues to make headlines.

A federal mandate to provide a 10% gasoline-blend by 2011 is paving the path for ethanol to become a mainstay of the American energy equation. Major oil companies are now embracing it and addressing the logistics and resources required to refine, blend, store, transport, and trade it vis-à-vis other refined products in their portfolios.
