Addressing the looming energy industry labor shortage seems to be discussion de rigueur at many a conference lately.
It was clearly on the minds of delegates at events I've attended this year in Beijing, Dubai, Chicago and Houston. In fact the last of these was titled "Oil & Gas Workforce Development -- Worker Shortages, Training Strategies and Collaborative Efforts."
I myself just finished up an article for Petroleum Africa on this very subject as the continent contends with its own staffing challenges against a fast-aging workforce and production goals set to double in the next twenty plus years. Production prospects for Africa's Oil is this week's cover story in the International edition of Time magazine.
Yes, being in the energy education business means I have a vested interest in energy participants' efforts to recruit and retain employees. So, I, along with all my colleagues here at The Oxford Princeton Programme, are keeping communication lines open with clients to understand your unique human resource challenges and to prescribe training solutions that ensure your employees are properly prepared to face the marketplace challenges today and into the foreseeable future.
Care to talk? We're accessible 24/7.
Best regards,
Jobert Abueva

With petroleum usage reaching record highs worldwide and petroleum production on the decline, the roles of LNG and GTL are poised to spring to the forefront of reliable energy resources.
"As demand from the advanced economies increases steadily and that of the transition economies of both the Near and Far East grows at unprecedented rates, a new 'Great Game' is upon us from both a market and geopolitical perspective," says GTL and Global LNG Course Director Leigh Bolton. "There is the beginning of a revolution in commercial, contractual and trading in the new Global LNG marketplace which may completely change the face of LNG markets in the next few years."
Three new additions have been made to our European course schedule:
LNG Shipping - A Voyage of Discovery: 7-9 November 2007, Oxford, UK
Gas-to-Liquids - A New Gas Horizon: 17 September 2007, London, UK
Global LNG: Import and Regasification - Europe: 22-25 October 2007, Dusseldorf, Germany
All three courses offer a certificate upon successful completion and seats are limited to ensure proper in-depth coverage. For those with widespread company interest, these courses may also be scheduled as on-site seminars. |

The Oxford Princeton Programme introduces two new seminars, both to debut in Singapore this year:
Biofuels - A Key Renewable Energy Option - 27-29 August 2007
This three-day seminar provides a comprehensive review on the current development and use of biofuels - ethanol and biodiesel primarily. The contents represent an end-to-end review of the philosophy, background, business strategy, application and use of biofuels from the plantation to the end user. Along the way we look at practical and operational matters, technical details, environmental impact, safety, cost features, supply, procurement and trading. Challenges faced in distribution and by the motor industry will also be addressed.
A mix of examples, case studies, exercises and topics for discussion will round out its content.
Oil Blending - Petroleum Products Quality Management, Control and Adjustment - 19-21 November 2007
This three-day seminar is a comprehensive introduction to blending and other ways to change or adjust product quality. Reformulation of fuels by blending or use of additives allows traders and suppliers to match refineries, to take control of quality and improve trading margins.
A combination approach of lecture and practical application will include examples, case studies, exercises and discussions.

What can delegates look forward to in your course?
Besides gaining a better understanding of the course's subject matter, I also hope some of my enthusiasm for the energy industry will rub off on them. It's a fascinating business.
How do you like to present your subject matter?
I really like to run courses in a relaxed manner, with humor, when I can. It makes learning more fun and, hopefully, more effective!
What are your career/professional highlights?
I was incredibly lucky to have been hired, right out of university, into a crude oil trading position at Texaco in Houston. That was back in 1975. Except for just over a year as a futures broker at Goldman Sachs in New York, I traded various kinds of crude oil from 1975 until I left the Total group in 2002.
What are some of the greatest challenges facing the energy sector?
Probably the biggest challenge is satisfying the public's demand for oil products while still keeping environmental concerns in mind. It's not an easy balance.
How do you like to spend your free time?
My husband and I have just bought our first home, in Oxfordshire, so right now that's taking most of my free time. But I enjoy music, movies, gardening and motor sports.
